Finasteride is used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by blocking the effects of an enzyme called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink and stop producing hair. This causes hair to become thicker and stronger, and may prevent further hair loss. Finasteride may also be used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. It works by reducing the effects of DHT, and reducing the risk of further hair loss. However, Finasteride does not work to prevent or treat prostate cancer or enlarged prostate gland. In some men, it may be used alone or in combination with other medications.
