This medication is a type of drug called a 5α-reductase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that plays a role in hair loss and has also been linked to prostate cancer. Proscar is also used to treat male pattern hair loss, but it is not as effective for women with female pattern hair loss. In women who are taking a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, the 5-alpha reductase enzyme converts testosterone into DHT.

If you are taking Proscar for an enlarged prostate, it may help to reduce your dose.

Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, about one hour before planned sexual activity. If you have diarrhea or gas when taking this medication, stop taking Proscar and see your doctor. Do not take Proscar with milk or milk products unless your doctor tells you to do so. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Proscar. Grapefruit juice can lower your blood pressure, which may increase your risk of high blood pressure or heart disease. Grapefruit juice may also increase your risk of developing blood clots in the lungs, as it can block the flow of blood to the lungs and lower your blood pressure.

Stop taking Proscar and seek medical attention right away if you have symptoms of low blood pressure, such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Grapefruit juice may affect the way Proscar works and may increase the risk of developing side effects.

The most common side effects of Proscar include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness or enlargement, and gynecomastia (breast tissue growth in men). If these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Less common side effects of Proscar include breast tenderness or enlargement, headache, breast pain or tenderness, and decreased appetite. However, these side effects do not need medical attention and may improve over time. Contact your doctor if these side effects worsen or do not go away.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Proscar can harm your unborn baby. If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as lumps, pain, nipple discharge, tender breasts, or discharge from the nipples, tell your doctor right away.

Proscar may cause low blood pressure.

Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.
